The students finished sharing their Fairy Tales aloud in class today (Wednesday.)

We will have library tomorrow (Thursday.)  The students need to remember to bring their library books to class.  Each student should take an AR test by March 6.

We will be doing Think Link testing on Friday.

This week, the students have been working with partners to create their own fairy tales.  Each fairy tale should include three fairy tale elements (found on page 270 of the reading book,) three similes, and three metaphors.  It should be at least two written pages long and include a one page colored illustration.  These will be shared in class tomorrow.

Homework:  The students were instructed to tear out grammar workbook page 13/14 to complete for homework.  Both sides should be completed. Follow the directions given.  For the writing application,  your paragraph should have five or more sentences.

Today the students had a new lesson on verbs.  This information can be found in the Writing and Grammar book, pages 314-315.  They completed an assignment from the tan books that are in the classroom.

Classes B and C also completed a review on similes and metaphors.  Classes A and D will do this tomorrow.

Homework:  The students were to tear out workbook page 15/16 on action verbs to complete for homework.  Complete both sides and follow the directions given.  Write good, sixth grade sentences for the Writing Application part.

There will be a test on similes and metaphors on Wednesday.  We will review in class before the test.

Today, classes A, B, and C reviewed similes and metaphors and completed two worksheets.  They began a third activity which we will complete tomorrow.  If you were absent, please see me for this work.

Class D worked on their journal entries begun Friday on comparing and contrasting “The Emperor’s New Clothes” and “King Long Shanks.”

Homework:  The 4-H Piggy Banks were due today.  Demonstrations are due Thursday, but students may bring their materials before then.  The students were to choose completing the piggy bank or the demonstration.  Students may complete both if desired.  If you are completing the piggy bank but did not bring one today, please do so by tomorrow.

Last week, the students read “King Long Shanks,” “Rapunzel,” and “Rumpelstiltskin” from the blue Elements of Literature book.  They also viewed videos of “Rapunzel,” “Rumpelstiltskin,” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”  We read about and discussed the elements of fairy tales, which can be found on page 270.  The students completed two Venn diagrams that compared and contrasted (A) “The Emperor’s New Clothes” and “King Long Shanks” and (B) “Rapunzel” and “Rumpelstiltskin.”

Today, classes A, B, and C had an open-book/note quiz on comparing and contrasting “King Long Shanks” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”  They also began a journal writing activity dealing with the fairy tales we’ve read in class.

Today, class D had a new lesson on similes and metaphors.  They will complete the quiz and journal activity Wednesday, due to a pep rally tomorrow.

Homework:  The students are required to do a demonstration or create a piggy bank for 4-H this nine weeks.  The 4-H newsletters were given on Tuesday, Jan. 13; directions for both projects were explained by Ms. Edwards on Thursday, Jan. 8. and again by Ms. Mullins on Tuesday, Jan.13. Each student was given a copy of the newsletter to keep.  The piggy banks are due on Monday, February 2. Demonstrations are due on Thursday, February 5.

The 4-H Public Speaking Contest is this Thursday, Jan. 29, at the Agricenter. Registration starts at 5:00 P.M., and the contest starts at 6:00 P.M.  We have several students from our team who will be competing. Good luck! : )

This week the students have read and discussed “The Emperor’s New Clothes” from the blue literature book.  We reviewed story elements, such as characters, plot, climax, and setting.  We discussed inferring a story’s theme, at length, as well as making generalizations.

Thursday, classes A and D had an open-book pop quiz on “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”

Friday, classes B and C will have a quiz on ”The Emperor’s New Clothes.” It will not be open-book.

Homework for this week:  Each student should be reading an AR book at his or her assigned level.  AR tests must be taken by March 6.

The students took the prepositional phrase test today.  We then reviewed story elements, concentrating on making inferences to determine the theme of a story.  The students began reading “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” which can be found on pages 245-248 of the Elements of Literature book.

Homework:  The students visited the library this week to check out books.  Each student should be reading an AR book for the third quarter.

The students had 4-H club with Ms. Edwards today.  Several students presented their speeches for her and did a great job!  Many of the students will represent our team at the Shelby County 4-H Public Speaking Contest on January 29.  : )

The test on prepositional phrases will be tomorrow.  Be able to identify prepositional phrases in sentences.  Information on prepositional phrases can be found on page 416 of the Writing and Grammar book.  A list of prepositions is on page 352.

Today we reviewed prepositional phrases.  The students completed an exercise from the English Workshop book in the classroom.  If you were absent, please see me to get this.

Homework:  Complete the front and back of the worksheet given in class.  Circle and highlight all of the prepositional phrases.

We will have a test on prepositional phrases on Friday.  Be able to identify them in sentences.  Information on this skill is on page 416 of the Writing and Grammar textbook.

If you are giving your 4-H speech for Ms. Edwards, please be ready to present it on Thursday.
