All of the classes took the test over the story “Just Once.”

Classes A, B, and D wrote summaries of the story by using the “Retelling” elements learned this week.

Class C took the test over collective, concrete, and abstract nouns, as well as the story test.

Today in class, we checked and discussed the study guide for “Just Once.” The students also took the vocabulary test.  If you were absent, please see me to make this up.

Class C (Enriched) also reviewed their notes over concrete, abstract, and collective nouns.  The test over these is tomorrow.  The students should be able to define what these are, give several examples of each, and use them in sentences.

Homework: Be ready for tomorrow’s test over the story “Just Once.”  Class C – Study your notes over concrete, abstract, and collective nouns.

My blog page was not updated yesterday due to the server being down during the afternoon, so I have included the information for both yesterday and today.

Tuesday – We reviewed for our noun test together in class. For classes B and C, I gave the students notes on exactly what would be tested. Classes A and D had additional review today before the test.

We also reviewed the five vocabulary words that are on page 18 of the literature book. Then we read the story, “Just Once,” which begins on page 19 of the literature book. We reviewed the elements of a story, which can be found on pages 2 and 3 of the literature book. Students were assigned a total of eleven words to know for their vocabulary test tomorrow. They are:

  • devastating
  • nurturing
  • anonymous
  • tolerant
  • ponder
  • plot
  • character
  • conflict
  • setting
  • climax
  • resolution

Homework for Tuesday was to study for the noun test and the vocabulary test.

Wednesday – Today the students took their test on nouns. They also began working on two sheets. One of these reviewed the elements of a story as they occurred in “Just Once, ” and the other one reviewed the vocabulary.

Homework for Wednesday: Study your eleven vocabulary words for tomorrow’s test. Complete the study guide for “Just Once.”

Language Arts, 8/25

Today, all of the classes discussed the elements of a story; this information can be found on pages 2 and 3 of the Elements of Literature book.

The students were also given the five vocabulary words for our story this week, “Just Once,” which begins on page 19.  The vocabulary words are listed on page 18, and the students were given a study guide listing the words and their definitions.

Homework: Complete the vocabulary chart given in class today.  The vocabulary test will be Thursday.  The English test on nouns has been rescheduled for Wednesday.

All of the classes took a quiz on nouns today.

Classes B, C, and D began writing a new journal entry about their experience in middle school so far, as well as their goals for middle school.

Homework: The test on nouns is scheduled for Tuesday.  Have a great weekend!  : )

All of the classes checked their homework together today. A homework grade was given for completion.

Classes A and D (first and last) had a lesson on common and proper nouns and completed an exercise from the tan books in the classroom.

Classes B and C (second and third) completed and turned in a worksheet on nouns. Please see me for this if you were absent. Then they began working on a noun puzzle which will be completed tomorrow in class.

Homework for all classes: There will be a quiz tomorrow over nouns. Be able to identify people, places, things, and ideas in sentences. See pages 294-297 in your Writing and Grammar book, and review your notes given in class on “idea” nouns.

All of the classes reviewed nouns today.  

Classes A and D (first and last) completed worksheet 17 on nouns.  If you were absent, please see me to get this.

Class B (second class) completed and checked two exercises on nouns from the blue books in the classroom.

Class C (third class/enriched) took notes on collective, concrete, and abstract nouns and completed an exercise from the blue books in the classroom.

Homework for all classes:  Complete workbook page 1, the front side only.  Follow the directions given on the sheet.

All of the classes had their first visit to the CMS library today.  Mrs. Peterson, our librarian, familiarized the students with using the library.  The students checked out an Accelerated Reader book and a book of their choice.  The students will need to memorize the last four digits of their social security numbers to use as their library codes.

Today in class, the students participated in a listening activity entitled “Miss Daisy,” a story about a school teacher and her adventures with her students.

Homework: Parent night for sixth grade is tonight at 5:30.  Sally Foster fundraiser information and TCAP scores were sent home today.  Teacher Edublog codes and e-mail addresses were also sent home on one sheet.  Parents, please sign and return the bottom of the sheet by Friday of this week.

We will be taking our first trip to the library tomorrow.
