Today we took a test over the three fables read last week:  ”He Lion, Bruh Bear, and Bruh Rabbit,” “The Fox and the Crow,” and “The Wolf and the House Dog.”  If you were absent, please see me to make this up when you return.

Homework:  AR test results are due by this Friday, May 15.  Field Day is Wednesday.

1. Blue reading book – Read all of page 366, “Before You Read.”

2. Read the three folk tales on pages 367-373.

3. Do page 374 (1-6) AND “Reading Check,” (b-e.)  Answer all questions in complete sentences.

4. Homework: Complete the study guide (3 pages.) There will be on open-note quiz tomorrow over the three folk tales read in class today.  There will be a test over these on Monday, May 11.  To prepare, read the stories again, and study the correct answers to your study guide.  We will check these together in class on Friday.

1st period Language Arts class reviewed analogies and completed a worksheet on analogies.

2nd period Language Arts class reviewed analogies and completed a worksheet on analogies.  Then they wrote a new journal entry using interjections.

3rd period Language Arts class reviewed plurals and possessives.  They completed a worksheet on this. Then they wrote a new journal entry using interjections.

4th period Language Arts wrote a new journal entry using interjections.

Homework:  Each student should read an AR book on his or her reading level and take an AR test by May 15.

Today we had a lesson on topic sentences and supporting details.  We compared the topic sentence to the main idea in a paragraph and discussed another name for the topic sentence:  Thesis Statement.

Homework:  Finish worksheet 14, front and back, on topic and supporting sentences.

Library day is tomorrow.  Bring your library books to class along with any fines you may have.

Field trip money and permission slips are due Thursday of this week.

Classes A and D worked on their poetry flip books.

Classes A and D worked on their poetry flip books yesterday and today. These books display the haiku, alliteration poems, metaphor poems, and limericks that the students have written.  We will work on these tomorrow in class.  They are due Friday.

Classes B and C reviewed haiku and corrected their original haiku poems. The students also wrote metaphor poems and read various poetry in class.

Homework:  You should be reading your AR book for the new nine weeks.

Today in Language Arts, we discussed folklore, repetition, refrain, and ballads.  We read the ballad “John Henry” and discussed it together, including the repetition and refrains used throughout.  Then the students watched the video of “John Henry.”  If you were absent, read pages 650-654 of the blue literature book.

Homework:  Start reading your AR book for the last nine weeks.

Today the students finished reading “The Sneetches” and discussed alliteration.

Homework:  Alliteration worksheet.

Tomorrow is picture day.

We will have 4-H on Thursday.  If you are participating in the bread baking contest, bring your three homemade biscuits on Thursday.  The photos are also due for the photography contest.  These activities are not required.

We started a poetry unit in class today.  The students were given a study guide containing poetry elements that they need to know.  The students also learned how to determine a poem’s rhyme scheme.  We began reading the poem “Sneetches,” which begins on page 627 of the blue reading book.

Homework:  You must take an AR test and print out your grade by Friday of this week.  We will have a test Friday over the poetry terms given today in class (see study guide) and the poem “Sneetches.”

Spring pictures will be taken on Wednesday of this week.

The students had a new lesson on linking verbs today.  This information can be found on page 316 of the Writing and Grammar book.

Homework:  The students were to tear out page 17/18 from their workbooks and complete it for homework. Follow the directions given on the sheet.  Do all of the parts.
